Keys & Bells explores performing small instruments in unique spaces around the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Keys consists of melodica performed and recorded in both a resonant atrium and near a water fountain in an enclosed outdoor area. Bells is a duet between a variety of small bells and a bell tower. In between Keys and Bells is the interlude which is what fall sounds like in Louisiana. While we don’t get color-changing leaves, we do get a deluge of large acorns.

The idea behind this album was to interact with the natural soundscapes of these spaces by both performing with them and working with their idiosyncrasies. Some of the non-intentional sounds you may hear are gusts of wind, airplanes, construction, pickup trucks (a staple of Baton Rouge), crickets, and students chatting, playing music, and skateboarding. Louisiana is an interesting place to record outdoors due to its range of weather and variety of insects. In January it was hailing, and in February and March it was pouring rain. If this were recorded during the summer, there would be a deafening din of cicadas and running air conditioners. Regardless of the season, Louisiana is a unique place to listen to, and hopefully Keys & Bells portrays some of its uniqueness.
