Simone Weil’s weaving of friendship, an absence or void, and that which is beyond (or, for me, subtracted from) sensibility guides much of this piece. There is the chance that a single chord, the composition of which we cannot know with certainty beforehand, stretched across an indeter- minate span of time, flickers—not in and out of being but as being. An uncovering of collectivities; a silent breeze only felt, perhaps, after it has passed; a shifting of the attention. The handshake of a friend on meeting again after a long absence.

This recording of ‘on meeting again after a long absence’ is about two and a half hours, played by Adam at our friends Chris & Michelle’s cabin by a lake in northern Minnesota. It is split into two discs.

from the score:
tune the guitar to any just intonation major, minor, or neutral triad such that all notes are present.

with fingers, play open strings quietly to somewhat quietly and very slowly.
perhaps two or three notes per minute.

each ringing for a moment or more, then gently dampened. one at a time.
once in a while, a longer pause between notes.

once in a long while, a 12th fret harmonic may be substituted for an open string.

this should ring out and fade naturally.
for a long time, making sure each open string is played at least once. _
